Ellen Arnold Groff was one of the strongest supporters for the arts in Lancaster. Not only did she support the Fulton, but her philanthropy included local museums, the Symphony, her beloved Saint James Church, and individual artists. Ellen’s strongest passion for the Fulton was based on her commitment to support new work, new playwrights and “cutting edge” theatre. Productions such as Wit, Doubt, Joyful Noise, or the commissioned production of The French Lieutenant’s Woman, were all high on Ellen’s list of favorites. Though she supported and attended all the musicals as well, it was the spoken word that excited her. When Ellen passed last year, she graciously left funds for the Fulton to do with “as we wish”. There was A LOT of conversation about how to use those funds and then, ultimately, it became crystal clear what we should do. Create a series in Ellen’s name that will continue the growth of new work, voices and productions that might not appear on our subscription series. This year, we will present 3 fully produced plays of the Ellen Arnold Groff Studio Series, Veronica’s Room by Ira Levin, the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Disgraced by Ayad Akhtar and 4000 Days by Peter Quilter.
