Mrs. Kemble's Tempest![]() By Tom Ziegler "Witty, wonderful...lovely and lively" She argued politics over dinner with a U.S. president, inspired such literary works as Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass and Henry James' Washington Square, and was arguably the first entertainment superstar of all time. Newspapers gossiped about her, and women imitated her style... After her divorce in 1849, she needed to support herself and started to give dramatic readings of Shakespeare's plays in which she performed all the roles. Set during one of those readings, Mrs. Kemble's Tempest juxtaposes the tumultuous ups and downs in the life of Nineteenth Century actress Fanny Kemble with the rapid reversals of fortune in Shakespeare's island fantasy, The Tempest. Jane Ridley, an audience favorite at the Fulton, stars in this one-woman tour de force, performing the role she originated to 5-star reviews at the famed Edinburgh Fringe Festival and later at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. |
