Captain Georg von Trapp: (mid 30's - mid 40's, Baritone, strong mover) A retired naval office, who is a proud Austrian and father. He has dealt with the death of his wife by distancing himself from his children by running his home like a naval ship, and being away from home often.

penniless impresario who is a true and loyal friend to the von Trapp family.

Elsa Schrader: (mid 20's - upper 30's, mezzo soprano, moves well) A baroness of taste and elegance, sophisticated, dignified and mature.

Mother Abbess: (40 plus, legit soprano/with wide vocal range, strong actress)
Motherly, understanding, strong and authoritative, but kind. She is mother figure for Maria.

Liesl von Trapp: (16, mezzo, dance) She is sweet, charming and Captain von Trapp's eldest child. She is a typical young lady with an interest in boys but has a maternal edge and cares deeply for her younger siblings. She has fallen in love for the first time (with Rolf).

Friedrich von Trapp: (14, soprano, dance) Oldest von Trapp boy. He has a tough yet reserved exterior, very much trying to be "the man" of the family.

Louisa von Trapp: (age 13, mezzo, move well) An aloof pre-teen with a mildly rebellious attitude and a trickster.

Kurt von Trapp: (age 10, soprano w/falsetto, move well) Gentle and mischievous.

Brigitta von Trapp: (age 9, mezzo, move well) Smart, reads a lot.

Marta von Trapp: (age 7, mezzo, moves well) Very sweet and gentle.

Rolf Gruber: (17, low tenor, dance) A delivery boy and Liesl's boyfriend. Very pleasant and gentle but a bit aggressive at times. He eventually fights for the Nazis.

Sister Berthe: (alto, moves well) Mistress of Novices, prudish, straight laced with a quick tongue, she is less tolerant than other nuns.

Sister Margaretta: (mezzo, moves well) Mistress of Postulants, very kind, understanding and concerned.

Sister Sophia: (soprano, moves well) Neither demanding nor critical, sticks with the rules.

Franz: (non-singing, 30+) The von Trapp butler, rather formal but not without spirit, he is very German and loyal to the Fascist cause.

Frau Schmidt: (non-singing, 30+) The housekeeper, stoic, very little personality; she does her job efficiently but without affection. Strong and somewhat dominating.

Herr Zeller: (non-singing, 40+) Stern and unsmiling, a typical Nazi official whose primary concern is to see that everyone toes the line.

Admiral von Shreiber: A retired Admiral in the Austrian Navy and neighbor of Captain von Trapp
